Unlocking Trauma with Andrea Blanch & Helen Neal

Helen Neal and Andrea Blanch, are co-founders of SRQ Strong, a nonprofit organization that was created to promote community-wide trauma awareness. They do this through community-engaged, cost-free and accessible education about trauma and resilience. The long-term vision is to create a community that cares for itself with the tools given through the education and healing process. They also act as connector and facilitator for similarly dedicated community nonprofits.

The importance of healing and education is not only for addressing the physical and psychological suffering but also for the potentials that can arise from this suffering: dehumanization, disassociation, and lack of empathy.

Forging & Tempering with Andrew Lane

When there wasn’t an opening in his shop class at school, Andrew Lane signed up for band in the hopes that eventually that opening would appear. It never did, but despite the initial disappointment, music would become the path he chose to follow. He attended the University of South Florida and the University of Maryland as a horn major and studied basic conducting at both schools.

Andrew won a french horn position with the United States Navy Band in Washington DC (1982-86), a position that allowed him to do free-lance work in the DC area with the National Gallery Orchestra, American Chamber, Orchestra, Handel Festival Orchestra, Filene Center Orchestra (Wolf Trap), Kennedy Center Orchestra and Fairfax Symphony. It was during this period that Andrew learned brass instrument repair which eventually evolved into building the Lanstro French Horn in 2014.

Special Episode: \"Summer of Music\"

In this episode, we talk about the music and sounds that are associated with summer – a special time of year that is filled with travel, vacations, graduations, family reunions, and all sorts of transitions. When traveling to these destinations by road or air we carry our suitcases and various smart devices to keep us entertained and “connected.” Included on some of those devices might be a playlist of music and podcasts to help pass the time, calm us, and potentially create a soundtrack for what might be a great adventure. However, even before our phones became the Swiss Army Knife of safe traveling and entertainment, we still had music and sounds that accompanied us on the road. Granted, we didn’t get to choose the sounds or have algorithms that curated lists, but we still had music and sounds that kept us company and anchored some great summer memories

Our guests Adam DeSorgo, Ellie Matsusaka, Danniel Anthon and Andrew Lane share their memories which include some of the “ancient ways” that we listened to music in the car before Bluetooth. This includes the tradition of mixtapes that functioned as social tokens and practical economics. Our guests also share their own playlist recommendations that we hope you will recognize, relate to and enjoy!

Episode #7: Songs of Hope with Craig Werth

In addition to his songwriting and performing, Craig worked for many years at the University of New Hampshire as an educational program administrator, a facilitator for the Browne Center for Experiential Education, and faculty member for UNH’s Thompson School of Applied Science. Currently, he teaches at the Chaplaincy Institute of Maine (ChIME) and serves as artist-in-residence and facilitator at Krempels Center - in support of people living with brain injury, designing and teaching classes in music, writing, improvisational theater and more. He is a Certified Music Practitioner through the Music for Healing and Transition Program.

Craig has toured much of the world as a professional musician, earning a Canadian Juno Award as co-producer of a Best Album of the Year in the Folk category. He remains an active songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, bringing his passion for music into his ministry at the Nottingham Community Church.

Larry Haron was proudly born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and has been happily residing just north of Atlanta, GA since 2005. He has served as a music minister in several churches over the years, both in Dallas and Atlanta areas. His professional experiences include being the Executive Producer for Singleton Productions, Inc. which produces Grammy and Dove Award-nominated music for corporations, and industrial & educational clients. As of 2011, has served as a hospice chaplain; in 2018, became a Certified Music Practitioner, providing live therapeutic music for hundreds of hospice, hospital, and rehab patients in the Atlanta area.

Episode #4: Multiverse in Music with Tihda Vongkoth

Tihda Vongkoth (she/they) is a co-founder of Modern Marimba in Sarasota and identifies as an able-bodied, non-binary person of the Lao diaspora. Tihda speaks standard American English but grew up listening to others speak Lao English and AAVE. They are U.S. college-educated and grew up in a working-class, single-parent family with heteronormative, assimilationist values. Tihda has appeared as a marimba soloist with The Florida Orchestra, the U.S. Air Force Band, South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, and the Interlochen Academy Orchestra. They have performed as a guest orchestral percussionist with the Sarasota Orchestra, The Florida Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, Naples Philharmonic, Opera Tampa, St. Pete Opera, and Jacksonville Symphony. Tihda is committed to using music as a tool for healing and liberation and hopes to cultivate a sense of curiosity, literacy in multiple musical languages, and a lifelong respect for many music communities. She will occupy the office of union president of the American Federation of Musicians Local 427-721 in January 2023. Tihda co-occupies a home in Sarasota/Calusa territory with her partner, Dean Anderson, who is also a percussionist.
